Phillip has practised Construction Law for almost 40 years.  He was with the international law firm MinterEllison for 33 years, 27 years as a partner and 13 years as head of the Construction, Engineering and Infrastructure group in Melbourne.

Phillip assisted client with complex projects on a ’cradle to grave’ basis, designing the procurement strategy, drafting and negotiating the contract, assisting with contract administration and managing the resolution of disputes.  He was the co-lead partner in the Murrin Murrin arbitration – the largest construction arbitration in Australia at the time and one of the first to be conducted on a ‘chess clock’ basis.  Phillip pioneered the use of Monte Carlo analysis of construction disputes and deployed this risk assessment tool, long used by industry, in providing advice to clients on the likely outcome of their disputes.

In addition to his practice as a construction lawyer Phillip has been involved in the industry through a number of industry bodies.  He was one of the founding directors and is a past Chair of the Society of Construction Law Australia, he is a past President of the Building Dispute Practitioners Society and a past Director of the Australian Construction Industry Forum.

Phillip’s has also conducted many training sessions often focussing on Contract Administration and Risk Identification, Management and Mitigation.  He is a long standing co-convenor of the Construction Law subject in the Melbourne Law School Masters of Construction Law program and is an Enterprise Fellow at the University of Melbourne charged with facilitating industry based research projects relevant to the construction industry.

Phillip also practises as an Arbitrator and is Chair of Architects Without Frontiers.
